  1. I suppose one could relate smǣte to ‘smithing’ from the Old English smiðian (‘to forge, fabricate’). Then it is connected to the modern Dutch word ‘smeden’, which still has the same meaning.
    smǣte-gylden can therefore be understood as ‘forged gold’ or – in Dutch ‘gesmeed goud’.
