    • How interesting — I hadn’t considered the second half of this compound. OE swangor means ‘Heavy in movement of the body or mind, slow, slothful, sluggish, indolent’, either physically or metaphorically. However, in Old High German (the earliest form of German, spoken around the same time as OE) swangar means ‘pregnant’. As someone who has experienced pregnancy herself, this seems an unfair characterization of the experience. A pregnant person’s body is far from being lazy, indolent or inactive!
